Deion Sanders Hiring Ex-Giants Head Coach Pat Shurmur at Colorado, per Report
Former Browns and Giants head coach Pat Shurmur will join Deion Sanders’s coaching staff at Colorado as an offensive analyst.
The news was first reported by Carl Reed Jr. of 247Sports. Shurmur brings more than 20 years of NFL experience to Sanders’s staff. Mike Klis of KUSA-TV in Denver reported that Shurmur came to CU’s campus on Friday to finalize the deal to join Sanders’s staff before flying back home to New Jersey that evening.
Shurmur is no stranger to Colorado as he previously served as the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Broncos from 2020-22. That was his last NFL job, one that ended with Denver firing him and former head coach Vic Fangio.
However, prior to his Denver stint, the 2017 AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year spent two seasons as the Giants head coach along with a head coaching stint in Cleveland. He also held assistant roles with the Eagles, Rams and Vikings.
Shurmur has not coached at the collegiate level since the late ‘90s when he served as the offensive line coach at Stanford under Tyrone Willingham. He was also a top assistant—coaching tight ends, offensive line and special teams—at Michigan State under George Perles and Nick Saban.
The 58-year-old joins a Buffaloes’ staff that includes offensive coordinator Sean Lewis as well as additional offensive assistants in Tim Brewster, Gary Harrell, Brett Bartolone and Bill O’Boyle.
Colorado will open the 2023 season on Sept. 2 against TCU.
