Fox’s Joel Klatt Offers Brutally Honest Opinion on Desirability of Texas A&M Job

Texas A&M will be looking for a new coach this offseason, as the Aggies fired Jimbo Fisher over the weekend. The move comes after Fisher disappointed at Texas A&M, going 19–15 in the last three seasons despite winning 26 games in his first three years.

The Aggies consistently hold themselves at a high standard in college football, but they are in a conference that is only going to get tougher once realignment takes shape.

Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt addressed Texas A&M’s situation on The Joel Klatt Show, and while he called the head coaching job at Texas A&M a “very good job, one of the best in college football,” he acknowledged the hurdles the school faces compared to other programs.

“It’s the fourth best job in its region,” Klatt said. “Oklahoma has a better tradition, Texas is still Texas, and LSU has a better tradition.”

Once A&M moved to the SEC, it didn’t need to worry about Oklahoma and Texas on the field, but now that those two schools are joining the Aggies in the conference, Klatt believes Texas A&M may suffer.

“All of those teams are about to be in your conference, and so if you look at just the conference they compete in, A&M is probably the 7th best job in the SEC,” he said.

Klatt added that Alabama and Georgia are better jobs right now, while a program like Tennessee has an argument as well. The analyst did admit that the new 12-team playoff could help the Aggies in a stacked conference once the new schools join the SEC.

Texas A&M has yet to play in the SEC championship game, despite joining the conference in 2012.
