Washington Puts Kicker on Scholarship After His Field Goal Beats Washington State
The last play of Washington's regular season may have been the biggest.
With five seconds left in a tied game between the Huskies and Washington State Saturday, Washington kicker Grady Gross strode onto the Husky Stadium field and calmly knocked through a 42-yard field goal to win the Apple Cup 24–21.
The boot sealed a 12–0 start for the Huskies, equaling a program record for wins in a season set in 1991 and tied in 2016. It was a kick worthy of reward—and Gross received the best kind of acclaim as Washington celebrated in the locker room postgame.
Huskies coach Kalen DeBoer commemorated Gross's heroics by announcing that Washington would put the Scottsdale, Ariz. native on scholarship.
Gross, a sophomore, entered Saturday 10-for-13 on field goals and 51-for-51 on extra points this season.
On the doorstep of its second College Football Playoff berth, Gross and the Huskies will meet Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game on Friday in Las Vegas.
