Robert Griffin III's Strong Review of Deion Sanders Led to Amusing Joke by Jay Gruden
Deion Sanders’ first season as head coach of the Colorado football program didn’t end nearly as well as it started. After a 3–0 start to the season, the Buffaloes limped to a 4–8 finish.
Colorado’s disappointing 1–8 end of the year resulted in many of Sanders’s critics making their opinions heard. But ESPN’s Robert Griffin III took the time to commend “Coach Prime” on a considerable improvement over the 1–11 team he took over.
Not everyone shared Griffin’s sentiments on the matter, however, and that included former NFL head coach Jay Gruden.
Gruden took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to Griffin’s post about Sanders, joking that he’d still be a head coach if four wins was considered a solid season.
“I wish 4 wins was the standard. I’d still be coaching,” wrote Gruden.
Gruden spent six seasons as the head coach in Washington from 2014-19. (He coached Griffin during the 2014 season.) He had a record of 35-49-1 across 85 games with the franchise, making just one playoff appearance during his tenure.
Griffin expressed optimism that Sanders and the Buffaloes will turn things around in 2024 when the program is set to join the Big 12 conference.
