CFP Rankings: Alabama Edges Out Florida State to Get Into the Playoff

Finally, after 14 weeks of action, the College Football Playoff is set. Of course, it didn’t come without controversy. 

The committee has spoken and Michigan, Washington, Texas and Alabama are your top four CFP teams and will compete for a national championship. Undefeated Florida State and reigning national champion Georgia were left out of the hunt in what ended up being the toughest Sunday Selection Show in recent memory. 

The Huskies and Wolverines were shoo-ins for a spot in the playoff. Both teams finished the season undefeated and won their respective conferences, but things got tricky when it came to the SEC. The Tide shockingly lost to the Longhorns early in the season but set the doomsday scenario in motion when they went on to win the SEC, defeating then-undefeated Georgia on Saturday. 

As a result of the upset, Texas’s win over Alabama made them look better. Along with their Big 12 championship win, the Longhorns earned their ticket to the top four. Alabama’s impressive run and win over Georgia was undeniable and was enough to convince the committee that it was one of the best teams in the nation. 

Georgia will miss the CFP after winning the last two national titles, but Florida State will have the best argument as the biggest snub. The Seminoles did everything they could, winning their conference and never losing this season. But the team looked mortal on Saturday, barely beating Louisville 16–6 in an ugly ACC championship game. That, alongside its quarterback Jordan Travis suffering a season-ending injury in November, seemingly left the committee feeling that Florida State wasn’t one of the four best teams in the country.
