CJ Carr, Grandson of Ex-Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr, to Sign With Notre Dame

C.J. Carr, the grandson of ex-Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, will sign his national letter of intent on Wednesday to play for Notre Dame in the 2024 football season.

Carr’s official commitment to the Fighting Irish program comes after he graduated from Saline High School (Mich.) earlier this month and received a waiver to participate in his first practice with the team on Saturday. Wednesday marks the first day of the three-day early signing period.

Carr, who has been committed to Notre Dame since June ’22, became the first commit in the program’s ’24 recruiting class to join the team. He will begin classes as a student when the spring ’24 semester begins in January ’24.

In his senior season, Carr threw for 2,754 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 67.8% of his passes through 11 games. He led the Hornets to a 9-2 record this past season.

Before signing with Notre Dame, Carr said he felt at home after his visit to South Bend. That led to him canceling visits to Alabama, Georgia and LSU during his recruiting process.

Carr could have followed in his College Football Hall of Fame grandfather’s footsteps, along with his dad, Jason, a former Wolverines’ quarterback. Despite shunning the blue and maize, Lloyd Carr was still happy for his grandson.

“I told everybody, ‘If he’s happy, I’m happy,’” Carr told the Associated Press.

Carr retired from Michigan in ’08 with a 122-40 record. He led Michigan to its last national championship in ’97. 

Instead, the younger Carr joins a Notre Dame team that finished 9-3 and one that will square off against Oregon State (8-4) in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 29.
