Bill Self Ejected for First Time at Kansas While Jayhawks Suffer Largest Loss Since 1950

Kansas coach Bill Self got his money’s worth as he was ejected in the second half of Monday night’s frustrating 79–50 loss on the road against Texas Tech.

The usually-composed Self was ejected for the first time in his 21 seasons as Jayhawks coach, and he saved the outburst at the officiating crew for the program’s worst loss since 1950.

The ejection came with 5:49 to play in regulation after a series of foul calls didn’t go his team’s way.

Self addressed his ejection in the postgame press conference.

“I didn’t curse him. I didn’t yell. But I did say a magic word, I guess, multiple times that got me a couple of technicals,” Self explained. “I really wasn’t trying to get thrown out. But you know, the way things [were] with the game, I honestly feel the game’s not being called the way it needs to be called. Regardless if it’s our favor or their favor, it makes no difference to me. That was frustration, but I felt that all year. So, good officials … good officials. I just don’t see it the same way that it’s being called.”

Kansas' head coach Bill Self yells to the referee as he gets ejected from the Big 12 basketball game against Texas Tech, Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at United Supermarkets Arena.

Bill Self was ejected for the first time as Kansas men’s basketball coach during a historic loss to Texas Tech.

The loss for No. 6 Kansas comes just two days after Saturday’s 64–61 home win against No. 12 Baylor. Despite having some momentum coming into Monday’s road tilt, the Jayhawks are pretty beat up. Kevin McCullar Jr. missed his second game in a row, and while Dajuan Harris Jr. played on Monday, he is not 100% after spraining his ankle on Saturday against the Bears.

Self acknowledged his team could use some rest.

“We’re beat up and tired right now,” Self said.

Kansas plays its second consecutive road game when it travels to No. 25 Oklahoma on Saturday.
