Batkid Saves the Bay Area

Often we hear about athletes and teams graciously partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help sick children realize a dream -- of meeting a player, or signing a "contract" with an professional team. Perhaps no team has stretched the bounds of wish fulfillment as the San Francisco Giants, who along with several thousand volunteers and the city itself, helped a local boy realize a dream to become "Batkid." Today, five-year-old Miles Scott indeed became Batkid, and much, much more.

A Batman impersonator and all those volunteers helped simulate Gotham-like scenes for Miles, sending Batkid and his Batmobile on missions throughout San Fran. For one heroic act, Batkid raced to a bank where he and his Bat-compadre had to stop Riddler's robbery attempt. At the time of this writing, Batkid is at AT&T Park foiling the Penguin's kidnapping of Giants mascot Lou Seal. Check out the sign at the park. Guyism has Batkid's itinerary and lots of pictures. Kudos to everyone involved.

Teachers Behaving Badly

Elsewhere in America, a Texas middle school teacher was fired for punching a 12-year-old kid in the face after the youngster joked about the teacher's favorite football team ... In Tennessee, a bizarre vandalism whodunnit was solved when police arrested an assistant coach who spray painted and defaced his own school's property, framing a rival school in an apparent attempt to motivate his team. His squad lost, and now he's in jail.

Gloves Are Off

SI.com published a package of 50 landmark hockey fights -- memorable battles that captured the "purpose, scope, intensity, and absurdity of fighting." I'd like to think number 51 on the list was this  target="_blank">bizarre 1995 goalie fight involving Devils backup goaltender Corey Schwab, who flew across the ice to instigate a brawl between him and fellow netminder Tommy Soderstrom. It was the first hockey game I saw live and the only goalie fight I've witnessed. Doesn't get any better.

Norwegian pranksters trapped Ikea customers in rooms ... A 9-year-old wrestled a bear ... Andre Igudolalahilariously left a few guys hanging ... Check out Louisville's black chrome helmets... Joakim Noahin a hat looks like a (rather large) ewok... One Air Jordan back tattoo to rule them all.
