UConn professor, Yale alum used exam to gloat about Huskies' upset

Thursday December 11th, 2014

Joe Chen is both a math professor at UConn and a Yale alumnus. So when the Bulldogs pulled off a shocking upset over the Huskies, Chen used the moment to inspire a question on his final exam.

What is the probability, Chen asked, that UConn loses to an Ivy League opponent again?

Chen told CBSSports.com that he collected data from Sports-Reference.com to see how UConn has fared against smartypants since 1980. He realized the sample size was large enough "that the central limit theorem can be applied to a very good approximation!" Indeed.

Chen told CBSSports that while he was happy his alma mater got the victory, he was upset with the way the Huskies have played during their three-game losing streak.

UConn gets a chance to break the streak on Sunday against Coppin State.
