Everyone knows the amazing story of Dock Ellis' no-hitter, which he claims he threw while under the influence of LSD in 1970, but lesser known is the story of what happened when Ellis tried to pitch under the influence of the drug a second time.

The story of the pitcher's decision to hit as many of the Cincinnati Reds as possible comes from a 1984 interview with Jet magazine about his struggle with drug addiction.

Ellis had a particularly thorny history with the Reds, who were the Pirates' primary rival throughout the '70's. In 1972, a security guard at Riverfront Stadium maced Ellis for failing to show ID while trying to enter the stadium, and Cincinnati star Joe Morgan accused the pitcher of throwing a spit ball.
