Rafael Nadal’s watch costs upward of $775,000

Rafael Nadal’s custom-made watch by Swiss watch maker Richard Mille costs upward of $775,000.

Surprise: The watch Rafael Nadal has been sporting this French Open is really, really expensive. As in, upward of $775,000.

That’s the listing price of the RM 27–02 model from Swiss watch maker Richard Mille, according to The Wall Street Journal. As For The Win points out, you have to imagine taxes and such would boost that figure even higher.

The watch can, of course, withstand the strain of a Rafa-quality tennis match considering it’s made of carbon and quartz with titanium screws. It can also withstand up to 5,000 Gs of force.

As the Journal reports, Nadal’s version of the RM 27–02 is the first of only 50 that will be built.

A natural question: how does Nadal, with his two-handed backhand, manage to swing without messing up either his wrist or the watch?

“In the beginning there was a little bit of transition, we had to work together to adjust everything to my wrist,” Nadal told the Journal. “It’s like you are wearing nothing. It’s part of my skin.”

We’ll take his word for it—that price tag is a bit high at present.
