Cubs elder statesman David Ross forgot the count during Game 4 of the NLCS.

Chicago trailed 6–0 in the top of the third, and after Travis Wood (relieving starter Jason Hammel) made a solid, outside-corner pitch with a 1–1 count, Ross, content, ran off the field. There were not three strikes. Nobody seemed to know where he was going. He made it all the way to the dugout steps before being reminded of the situation.

It was a rare spot start for the 38-year-old Ross, who gave Miguel Montero a breather as Chicago fought off elimination. He is by all accounts a great man. We won’t hold it against him.

But as of the top of the sixth inning, that was pretty much how things were going for the Cubs, who trailed 6–1.
