On May 24, 1981, Bobby Unser won his third and last Indy 500 in what is considered one of the most controversial finishes in the event's history. Unser was stripped of the title a day after winning it on the grounds that he passed cars illegally in the pits, but he had the title restored in October via an appeals process.
