It’s been a little while since we’ve seen a fresh list of wacky minor league baseball team names. Fear not, the Lynchburg Hillcats are here to end the drought.
The Hillcats are looking to rebrand themselves and have asked fans to vote on a new name. Compared to how these things usually go, the options are pretty tame—Lamb Chops, Doves, Derechos and River Runners. Keeping the Hillcats name is also on the table.
But there’s one option that really sticks out. The Lynchburg Love Apples.

“Love Apples is a tribute to the Lynchburg legend that Thomas Jefferson was the first to bite into tomato (called a Love Apple) proving that tomatoes weren't poisonous,” the team says.
This is quite clearly the best option. I’m imagining a cross between an apple and the heart eyes emoji as the logo. The mascot can be Thomas Jefferson dressed as cupid, eating a tomato like an apple.
