ESPN’s Rece Davis Gave Us One of the Best Calls of All Time—About Bacon
1. “Do you believe in miracles?”
“The Giants win the pennant!”
“Little roller up along first, behind the bag, it gets through Buckner!”
When thinking about the greatest sports call of all time, those three listed above immediately come to mind.
And now we have another sensational call to add to this list, courtesy of ESPN’s Rece Davis and … bacon.
Late in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s Miami–Virginia Tech game, the Hurricanes’ Jordan Miller went to the free throw line for two shots. He missed the first. That meant if Miller missed the second, the Hokies fans in attendance would win free bacon.
Davis did an excellent job building up the palpable excitement as the crowd started going wild. As Miller’s second shot clanked off the front of the rim, Davis exclaimed, “BACON FOR EVERYBODY! Sizzle it up in the frying pan!”
Goosebumps. Electric. What sports is all about.
Davis, being the true professional that he is, didn’t stop there. He finished his call by throwing out some key information.
“The Hokies 6–1 all time when the fans win bacon,” revealed Davis.
The stat ended up being useless because Miami beat Virginia Tech, 76–70, but at least the Hokies fans can drown their sorrows today in a delicious, salty, fatty treat.
2. For some unknown reason, 4.6 million people watched the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night. This was the lowest-rated NBA All-Star Game of all time.
NBA All-Star Saturday night drew 3.4 million viewers, down from 4.2 million last season.
3. On last week’s First Take, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo and JJ Redick got into a heated debate about whether the NBA was much more physical in the 1980s and ’90s compared to today (it was).
NBA legend Dominique Wilkins came out Tuesday and blasted Redick for his take.
4. ESPN’s Richard Jefferson just gets it.
5. Mets manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday that the bullpen cart may be making a comeback. With baseball going to a pitch clock, relievers may need to get to the mound quicker, hence using the bullpen cart.
The possibilities here are endless. Teams don’t have to just use a golf cart to transport a reliever. We’d love to see them use all kinds of vehicles. Just look how cool things were in the 1980s when it came to Major League Baseball.
