NBA Fans Think Meyers Leonard Accidentally Celebrated for the Wrong Team

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this article didn’t state that Leonard may have been signaling the Bucks to go for a 2-for-1 scoring opportunity at the end of the half.

Bucks center Meyers Leonard looked like he was fired up from the bench against the Heat after a big three-pointer in Game 3, only, it wasn’t Milwaukee who was on the scoring end.

Leonard could be seen lifting his arms in the air after Caleb Martin hit a three for Miami, which led many to think that he was rooting for his former team in Miami rather than his current one.

Milwaukee signed Leonard to a 10-day deal before eventually extending him a contract offer for the rest of the season in March. He saw limited opportunity on the court, making just nine appearances for the team in the regular season.

However, it seems likely that Leonard wasn’t actually confused, and was in fact signaling Milwaukee to try for a 2-for-1 scoring opportunity at the end of the first half. Martin’s three-pointer came with 46 seconds left, leaving the Bucks enough time to score twice.

Leonard played for the Heat from 2019 to ’21. He was suspended by the NBA after using antisemitic language while on a livestream. He subsequently underwent ankle surgery, which caused him to miss the entire ’21–22 NBA season.

The Bucks went on to lose Game 3, 121–99, and after losing Game 4 on Monday trail Miami in the series 3–1.
