LSU’s Angel Reese Guarantees Another Championship During ESPYs Speech
LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese took home an award at the 2023 ESPYs on Wednesday, beating out Iowa’s Caitlin Clark in the “Best Breakthrough Athlete” category.
During her acceptance speech, Reese delivered a bold promise, guaranteeing that the Tigers were set to win another national championship in 2024.
“I just want to thank LSU ... my family, my teammates, my coaches, Kim Mulkey, everybody that helped me. Last year I transferred from the University of Maryland and came to LSU and I just joined a family. So, I just want to say thank you, and another natty is coming. Period,” Reese said.
Before walking away from the microphone, Reese replicated the “you can’t see me” hand gesture she made during LSU’s NCAA tournament run, generating some applause from the crowd.
It wasn’t the first time she made the gesture that evening. While presenting a separate award, Reese offered some words of encouragement for young women across the country.
“You are in charge of your own athletic journey. You can do anything. They cannot see you,” said Reese, while making the gesture.
Also in the running for the “Best Breakthrough Athlete” award was 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft before eventually starring for San Francisco in the playoffs.
But it was Reese that took home the honors, and her breakthrough apparently makes her confident that another standout season for the Tigers is imminent.
