The Angels had a down year in 2019 finishing the season with a 72-90 record. But too often fantasy baseball players ignore players from the bad teams which is a novice mistake. There’s a handful of quality players from Los Angeles that can help fantasy baseball players win their league.

Sports Illustrated’s Shawn Childs highlights the best players to draft and avoid in his Los Angeles Team preview. Mike Trout is one obvious player but Childs goes much deeper with the Angels roster and calls outfielders Jo Adell a sleeper candidate for 2020 and Justin Upton a value pick based on his current Average Draft Position of 191. One player from the Angels Childs says not to draft is pitcher Griffin Canning. Childs says there are red flags with Canning because of a right elbow injury.

Corey Parson: Hey, what's up with Corey Parson the fantasy executive here from SI.com, getting ready to talk a little fantasy baseball. Joining me to do that is SI's fantasy and gambling analyst Shawn Childs. Shawn when you look at this Angels roster, can you pick out a sleeper and a value pick for me.

Shawn Childs: Sure. Jo Adell is a guy that the Angels really need to take off and be the leadoff hitter and he's not quite ready, has very little time at Triple-A, struggled with his contact rate last year, close to over 30 percent. But he checks a lot of boxes. He's going to score runs. He makes good hard contact is average hit rate's high. He's going to hit over .400 when he puts the ball in play. He's even going to steal some bases. So he does what they need. He just needs a little more seasoning. I expect him probably if it was a full season, he was going to start at triple-A this year. But in the early draft season, fantasy owners are actually investing in him as he was a potential starter. But the news in March kind of pushed him back a little bit. So he's a guy you want to keep an eye on. Very attracted to him. It's just he's not really going to hit the ground running unless angels this, you know, add that extra guy and he's in the starting lineup. As far as value. Justin Upton struggled last year with an injury. He really had a down season, but prior to that, he had averaged 150 games with like 30 home runs each year. But hitting next to Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon is a great opportunity in runs and RBIs. So he's gonna hit 30 home runs for a full season and half that probably for this year. But batting average, we were kind of neutral. But he is going to drive in some runs and even steal a couple bags. So he's he's a good guy that's a value. Probably going around pick 200 in early drafts and twelve team leagues.

Corey Parson: So what about all player on this roster that we should possibly stay away from?

Shawn Childs: Some shying away from Griffin Canning is he's a talented pitcher. He flashed last year in the majors over eight starts. But he had an elbow injury cost him. He really struggled down the stretch and then in spring training had a second one. And I know he's kind of progressing, you know, in May. And he looks like he'll make it back to his starting rotation when the season starts. But unfortunately, you know, it's elbow injury like that can eventually lead to Tommy John surgery. And you're investing in a high traffic arm like that when he's a top four pitcher. So I like his upside. He is talented. I'm just fearful that he could have a setback. Maybe the shortened season, you know, works in his favor. But he's a guy that I'll probably avoid completely this year. Not that I don't like him. I just don't trust his health.

Corey Parson: All right. For all the latest from the majors keep it right here at SI.com.
