2023 Valero Texas Open Full Field: Last Chance to Get Into the Masters

On the heels of several designated events and immediately before Augusta National, the field at TPC San Antonio has few top stars but one very big perk for winning.

Few events on the PGA Tour can boast the history of the Valero Texas Open, which dates to 1922. Tip of the cap if you know that Bob McDonald won that first Texas Open at Brackenridge Park Golf Course.

The event is still going strong, returning to TPC San Antonio for a 90th edition, but the field is a bit compromised given its spot on the schedule.

Three of the previous four weeks on Tour have had big-money designated events, and next week is the season's first major at Augusta National. So that means most of the top players in the Masters field take the week off to rest and prepare. Only two players in the top 30 of the OWGR (and Sports Illustrated World Golf Ranking) were on the preliminary entry list for the Valero Texas Open: Tyrrell Hatton and Hideki Matsuyama.

But the winner this week gets a Masters invitation if not already eligible, and that would describe the vast majority of the field. Most notable is Rickie Fowler, who is here after failing to advance far enough at the WGC-Dell Match Play to get within the OWGR top-50 cutoff. Many fans at the Oaks Course will be pulling for him.

J.J. Spaun returns as the defending champion. The event has an $8.9 million purse with the winner earning $1,548,000.
