JJ Watt Has PSA for Fans at Waste Management Pro-Am: ‘If I Hit You, I Apologize’

JJ Watt is set to play in the celebrity-filled WM Phoenix Open pro-am on Wednesday, but it seems as though he’s experiencing some pre-tournament nerves. The recently retired Cardinals defensive end took to Twitter to give fans an honest warning: watch your head.

The pro-am takes place before the official tournament begins, but any day at the WM will be anything but calm—especially with Super Bowl festivities being held in the same area. Watt knows there will be fans lined up to watch the event, prompting him to film a public service announcement.

Golf isn’t Watt’s strong suit. He admits he’s never played in front of a crowd before, and the added pressure concerns him. But Watt decided to be proactive by addressing the possibility of off-line drives hitting spectators.

“I am not a good golfer. So I just want to put this out there to let anybody coming to the tournament know: Please watch your head. I’ve never golfed in front of other people before. I’m not a good golfer when there’s not people around,” Watt said.

“So when you attend the Waste Management, enjoy yourself, have a blast, scream, yell, boo, cheer, whatever you want to do, toss me a beer, whatever, but just watch out,” he continued.

Some golfers have high hopes for a personal best round every time they tee it up. Watt, on the other hand, apparently just wants to manage expectations.

“I have no clue where the ball’s going,” Watt admitted. “I’m trying to put it in the fairway. It’s not going to go there. So just please keep your head on a swivel, enjoy yourself, and give me a little bit of leeway. Or don’t, I don’t care.”

Despite Watt’s nerves, he knows he’ll have a good time no matter what. The pro-am includes several other football VIPs, including Reggie Bush, Adam Thielen and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
