Jon Rahm’s Year Has Been So Good He Needed to Reset His Goals

Jon Rahm reserved a few days in his schedule to celebrate his 2023 Masters victory, but he also had to carve out time for something else: a reconsideration of his season-long goals.
Rahm, 28, came into 2023 with seven PGA Tour wins, including a major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Just under four months into the calendar year, Rahm has collected four more trophies, including his second major. In addition to winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the American Express, the Genesis Invitational and the Masters, Rahm has posted three top-15 finishes this year.
At the Mexico Open, where he’s defending his title this week, Rahm explained that his stunningly strong start to 2023 has forced him to reassess his aspirations for the year.
In fact, Rahm’s season has been so good that he had to set new goals for himself even before he winning the green jacket.
“Yeah, I had to reassess [my goals] even before winning the Masters,” Rahm said. “One of my goals for earlier in the year, I mentioned it a couple times, was to win multiple times again on the PGA Tour, and I won my first two events. After L.A., I kind of had to—you kind of need to reset because I was getting close to accomplishing everything I had set my mind to.”
Rahm is always bullish when speaking about his game, but he clearly did not envision such an incredible run when he looked ahead to this season. The Arizona State product exceeded his expectations to the point of having to physically sit down with his mental coach, Joseba Del Carmen, to lay out some objectives for the remainder of the year.
“I like being able to—if you have to reset or refresh your goals, it’s an amazing thing because that means you’re exceeding your expectations. So I did have a day with my mental coach where we talked about things and reassessed and refocused on what we wanted to accomplish in the year. Yeah, I had to do it, which again, it’s a wonderful thing to do,” Rahm said.
Yearly goals are only so indicative of the results, however. Rahm might have outperformed his 365-day plan, but in reality, he’s been on an incredible hot streak since his win this time last year in Mexico. In 24 events during that time, Rahm won seven times, posted 15 top-10 finishes, and did not miss a single cut.
This week, Rahm will look to win again on Spanish-speaking soil and add to his already-decorated year.
