Justin Thomas Made Strange Ex-Girlfriend Analogy to Discuss Wait for Ryder Cup Selection

Justin Thomas breathed a sigh of relief when Ryder Cup Team USA captain Zach Johnson announced he’d be one of his six captain picks for the 2023 team.

Ahead of his appearance in the Fortinet Championship in Napa, Calif. on Wednesday, Thomas was asked what it was like waiting to see if he made the Ryder Cup team for a third consecutive time.

He gave quite the interesting comparison.

“I told Zach after the fact that I compared it to like if you had an ex-girlfriend that you were trying to find any excuse you could to reach out to them to get in contact, that’s pretty much how I felt like with Zach,” Thomas said. “It’s very tough when you can’t do anything about it, especially I literally couldn’t do anything about it.”

It’s a good thing Johnson called.

Thomas is entering the Ryder Cup coming off of a rough season on the PGA Tour. He missed three out of four major championship cuts, and he walked away with zero wins this season.

But, Thomas has posted quite the Ryder Cup record in his previous two appearances. He’s gone 6-2-1 overall, with an undefeated record in singles. The Ryder Cup runs through Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
