Scottie Scheffler's Next Finish Outside the Top 12 Will Be His First, That's How Good He's Been in 2023

Scottie Scheffler has been on an epic roll of late, even if he doesn’t have all the victories to show for it. His tie for fourth at the Travelers Championship meant he’s not been out of the top 12 in any tournament this year, including the WGC-Match Play. That’s 15 events with two wins, a second and three thirds. His worst finish was a tie for 12th at the Genesis Invitational back in February.
There’s also been some frustration along the way. Scheffler’s putting has clearly kept him from even more success, given that his ball striking has been amazing. In his last 10 events, Scheffler has not been worse than fifth in strokes-gained tee-to-green, finishing first or second in eight of the events.
"I try to be consistent," Scheffler said last week. "I think that’s something we always strive for as players. This year I put up a lot of good scores and it’s been fun. Just hoping to improve a little bit at a time.
"I think most if it is showing up with the right attitude and my body has felt great all year. Swing has felt nice. When you’re hitting nit pretty good it’s definitely easier to shoot those scores than when you’re scrambling around all over the place."
To put his success in even more perspective, Scheffler has played in 14 stroke-play events this year and has seen just 66 golfers in all those tournaments finish ahead of him. For the entire 2022-23 season, he has 14 top-10s and 17 straight without a finish worse than 12th.
Now the question is can Scheffler’s putting catch up? Or is there some falloff that will require his putting to get better to keep contending as he’s been contending?
No matter, it’s been a crazy run of good golf for Scheffler, who remains ranked No. 1 in the world and SI World Golf Rankings.
