Golf World Reacts to Tiger Woods’s Latest Surgery Announcement

Tiger Woods announced that he underwent ankle surgery Wednesday in New York, leaving his status for the remainder of the 2023 season largely unknown.
Woods, 47, announced the surgery on his Twitter account, where his team shared that the procedure was “successful.”
Dr. Martin O’Malley at HSS Sports Medicine performed a “subtalar fusion” to address arthritis issues associated with the injury Woods sustained in a 2021 car crash.
At last month’s Masters, Woods withdrew following the suspension of the third round at Augusta National, where he was seen limping severely as inclement weather rolled through the area. Woods will presumably miss the PGA Championship next month at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
When news of Woods’s surgery circulated, an outpouring of reactions from the golf community flooded social media. Fans and media members alike wished Woods a speedy recovery.
The 15-time major champion’s surgery adds to a long list of procedures he has undergone throughout his decorated career.
Nothing in golf more ominous than a caption-less Tiger tweet. Out indefinitely after this latest surgery. https://t.co/HMmTfWx5vK

Imagine going through 1/10th of the surgeries & pain Tiger has endured. Brutal https://t.co/xavTj4EI0o

Cleveland Clinic says 6-12 weeks until you can put any weight on the ankle. Then it's walking in a boot. Then it's rehab.

I'd be surprised if he plays in any of the remaining 3 majors in 2023. https://t.co/lm8142Cy9M
No further details on the surgery. Not sure if @TigerWoods will be ready for the @usopengolf or the @PGAChampionship. Looks unlikely. https://t.co/joljxMTn2X

That's one hell of a first sentence.

Best wishes to Tiger. Hope we see him again sooner rather than later. https://t.co/GIgrSuJrJy
:( no Tiger at Oak Hill https://t.co/RvDIZu1IHT

Doesn't sound PGA Championship ready to me. Disappointing for the Oak Hill crowd. https://t.co/e0HHAfHE26

It certainly appears Tiger Woods won't be at the @PGAChampionship at Oak Hill. He had ankle surgery and is beginning rehab. https://t.co/ePU6B6HROY

Tiger's desire to be a professional and to show up when he knows he doesn't have anything in the tank is perhaps the most admirable part of his career, but it's time to have a real conversation about him retiring from major championship golf.
