Fore! Things

1. Viktor Hovland’s BMW Championship victory saw him set an Olympia Fields Country Club course record of 61, his career low round. Ten birdies were his most ever in a round.

2. Scottie Scheffler finished tied for second but moved to first in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of Hovland and Rory McIlroy. It is the second straight year he enters the Tour Championship in the top spot—he finished second to McIlroy last year.

3. Jon Rahm slipped to fourth in the standings from the top spot, having tied for 37th last week and then tying for 31st at the BMW.

4. Matt Fitzpatrick went from 40th to 10th in the FedEx Cup standings while Chris Kirk dropped out of the top 30, the only movement.

Fore! More Things

1. It’s been an amazing 14 months for former U.S. Amateur champion Andy Ogletree. He finished last in the very first LIV Golf event and was subjected to the derision that came with that. He didn’t get to play in another LIV event the rest of last year and was not allowed into PGA Tour/Korn Ferry Tour events. But he later won an International Series event on the Asian Tour and has won two this season, including Sunday in England, beating Ian Poulter by seven shots. He leads the International Series Order of Merit by more than $450,000 with five events to play. The top finisher gets an automatic spot next year in the LIV Golf League.

2. The OWGR quest for LIV Golf has quieted down in the wake of the "framework agreement" to be negotiated between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Various entities associated with the OWGR met over three different days last month at the British Open but the decision has been made to put the LIV bid on hold until there is a resolution to the agreement.

3. The PGA Tour has yet to say anything official as it is too soon, but it will have a decision on its hands regarding the start of the 2024 season at Kapalua for the Sentry tournament on Maui. The recent fires that have decimated Lahaina will likely have an impact on various issues associated with running a big tournament. And the idea of golfers playing for millions of dollars is also a difficult thing to navigate. The sense is if the Tour does play there, it will make it all about the rebuilding efforts on the island with considerable economic benefit and charitable contributions going to the cause.

4. There are three days until the first round of the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. And 39 days remain until the first session of the Ryder Cup in Italy.
