Twitter hoping its Moments section shines during Olympics

Social media platforms around the world are preparing for the official launch of the Olympics on Friday night. One of the leaders in generating the social content around the Games will be Twitter, which is adding a few extra features including a new “Olympics” section in their Moments tab and hundreds of new emojis to add into tweets.

For those of you that don’t know what the Moments section of Twitter is, it’s a part of the platform where users can read curated tweets about a particular event or story. The tweets are chosen by the Twitter team to make sure every angle and detail of the story is shared. Here are some of the guidelines to creating a Moment:

• Every Moment should provide information or an angle that is unique to Twitter.

• Every Moment should inspire viewers to want to share it.

• Every Moment should be timely.

• Every Moment should highlight the people, voices, and perspectives of a story.

• Every Moment should rely heavily on visual imagery; text-only Tweets should be reserved for the most powerful and affecting messages.

With this new feature, Olympics fans will be able to follow each day’s highlights and keep up with medal counts. These Moments will be available in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. So don’t fret if you miss an event or two—these Moments will be able to keep you constantly up to date!

“Twitter’s activation of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will bring fans around the world together to see what’s happening with the teams before, during and after the top athletes compete for glory,” Twitter CMO Leslie Berland said in a statement. “Twitter, Vine and Periscope will offer fans inside access, commentary, highlights, and conversation throughout the Games and as the action unfolds.”
