Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina exited Wednesday night's game against the Pirates with what the team is calling a right thumb sprain. The six-time All-Star will undergo further tests on Thursday, the Cardinals tweeted.

The injury occurred when he appeared to hurt himself on a slide after taking third base on an Allen Craig grounder in the second inning. He initially remained in the game behind the plate at the top of the third but did not come out to hit when the Cardinals returned to bat. Tony Cruz pinch hit for him.

The team also tweeted that third baseman Matt Carpenter was having his hand checked out by trainers and manager Mike Matheny. He had landed awkwardly on his glove hand when Jody Mercer hit a sharp grounder to third and appeared to injure his wrist in the process.
