Giants' Matt Cain to undergo elbow surgery, likely to miss season
Giants starter Matt Cain is expected to undergo surgery to remove bone chips and spurs from his throwing elbow, MLB.com's Chris Haft reported on Friday.

Cain played catch at 60 feet before San Francisco's game in New York against the Mets on Friday, and he said he hasn't decided when he'll have the operation, Haft reports. The minimum recovery time for the procedure is around three months, so he could wait until the offseason to have the surgery and still be ready for spring training.
"If you're putting odds on it, odds are going to be that he will not pitch," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said about the rest of this season.
Cain, who officially went on the disabled list July 21, had hoped to return this year after rehabbing the elbow, but he visited Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday and consulted with Mets team doctor David Altchek on Friday and both recommended surgery.
The 29-year-old Cain, a three-time All-Star, went 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 15 starts this season. He is 95-95 with a 3.39 ERA in 10 seasons with the Giants, and he threw at least 200 innings every year from 2007-12. He threw 184 1/3 innings last season.
