Nationals call up veteran outfielder Nate Schierholtz
The Washington Nationals have called up outfielder Nate Schierholtz from Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced Saturday.
Schierholtz, 30, was signed by the Nationals to a minor-league deal Monday. He was released by the Chicago Cubs earlier this month after hitting .192 with a .541 OPS in 99 games for the team.
An eight-year veteran, Schierholtz spent time with the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies before joining the Cubs. He had his best season in 2013 while playing for Chicago, hitting 21 home runs and putting up an OPS of .770.

To make room for Schierholtz on the roster, Washington sent rookie Michael A. Taylor to Syracuse. Taylor had three hits in 18 at-bats after making his major league debut Aug. 12.
The Nationals also transferred outfielder Nate McLouth to the 60-day disabled list. The team announced earlier this week McLouth is out for the rest of the season after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder.
Washington is currently in first place in the National League East, carrying a 74-54 record after defeating the Giants on Saturday.
