The Phillies have selected pitching prospect Jake Thompson, who will make his MLB debut on Saturday.

The 22-year-old righthander was a big piece of the trade that sent Cole Hamels to Texas last season. With Aaron Nola going to the disabled list, Thompson was brought up to take his spot in the rotation. He will start Saturday in San Diego against the Padres.

Thompson posted an 11–5 record in 21 starts at Triple A Lehigh Valley this season, with a 2.50 ERA and 1.09 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 129 2/3 innings. He had a 1.21 ERA in his last 11 starts.

Baseball America rated Thompson as the organization’s No. 3 prospect at mid-season.

The Phillies are 51–60 entering Saturday’s game.
