Shohei Ohtani Breaks Impressive Nolan Ryan Streak in Start vs. Nationals
The legend of Shohei Ohtani continues.
The Angels’ do-it-all superstar had another impressive outing on the mound on Tuesday night against the Nationals, pitching seven shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six. He did have five walks, but the start lowered his ERA to 0.47 this season.
According to the team’s public relations Twitter account, Tuesday was Ohtani’s 10th straight start allowing two runs or fewer, which is a new Angels record. The streak broke a record held by one of the greatest pitchers of all time, Nolan Ryan, who had a nine-game streak across the 1972–73 seasons.
Ohtani improved to 2–0 on the season in three starts and has struck out 24 batters while walking 12. He has only given up one run in 19.0 innings pitched.
At the plate, Ohtani continues to serve as the team’s designated hitter and is off to a strong start. He’s hitting .300 with three home runs and eight RBIs.
Ohtani has already distinguished himself as one of the best two-way players the game has ever seen, and is only further cementing his legacy in just his sixth major league season.
