Red Sox Place Reliever Zack Kelly on 15-Day Injured List

After leaving in the fifth inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Rays in tears following an apparent elbow injury, the Red Sox have placed reliever Zack Kelly on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.

The Red Sox recalled right-hander Kutter Crawford from Triple-A Worcester to take Kelly’s spot on the active roster.

Kelly was called upon Wednesday night to replace starter Chris Sale. But after two-thirds of an inning, he went down holding his right elbow in pain after hitting Rays designated hitter Yandy Diaz with a pitch.

Kelly walked off the field with a trainer and manager Alex Cora by his side.

Kelly is no stranger to elbow pain, as he tore the UCL in his right arm and underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020. There is no indication yet as to whether Kelly suffered a similar type injury Wednesday, but for now, he will be on the shelf for at least two weeks to rest his arm.

The Red Sox lost to the Rays on Wednesday night and fell to 5-7 on the season, while the Rays continued their torrid start, moving to 12-0.
