Mets to Call Up Catcher Gary Sánchez Amid Offense’s Struggles, per Report
The Mets plan to call up former All-Star catcher Gary Sánchez to the active roster on Friday, per a report by SNY’s Andy Martino.
Sánchez is being recalled to the Mets after playing well during his time with Triple A Syracuse, where he amassed three extra-base hits while collecting five RBIs in 32 plate appearances. The veteran will form a tandem behind the plate with rookie Francisco Álvarez.
Sánchez, who had previously signed a minor-league deal with the Giants back in March, failed to earn a call up to the San Francisco’s major league roster after batting a dismal .164 with no home runs, eight RBIs and 19 strikeouts in 16 games at Triple A Sacramento.
Sánchez, who spent the 2022 season with the Twins after being acquired in a trade with the Yankees, has struggled to display his rookie form of 2016, when he hit 20 homers with 42 RBIs in just 53 games. In 2022 with Minnesota, Sánchez recorded 16 home runs and 61 RBIs, but he struggled to find consistency at the plate, hitting just .205.
The Mets are hoping that despite failing to higher than .232 in each of his last five seasons in the majors, the 30 year-old Sanchez can help ignite a stagnant New York offense that is hitting just .240 (ranked No. 20 in MLB) as a team on the season.
