Brewers' Wait for Abner Uribe, JoJo Romero Just Took Major Turn

The Milwaukee Brewers' bullpen is about to get a whole lot better.

Right now, the Brewers have the third-best bullpen ERA in baseball at 3.33, despite the fact that they aren't at full strength. Milwaukee has been missing 26-year-old reliever Abner Uribe since Aug. 9. The Brewers went out and acquired JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals ahead of the 2026 trade deadline, but he hasn't made his debut yet because he's been on the Injured List following an appendectomy.

Milwaukee is getting by right now without both, but the two are inching towards the mound. On Monday, the official Wisconsin Timber Rattlers X account shared that both Uribe and Romero will begin a minor league rehab assignment in High-A on Tuesday.

This is huge for Milwaukee. Uribe has been among the best relievers in baseball when he has been on the mound this season. The righty has appeared in 49 games for the Brewers and has a 2.05 ERA and a 48-to-18 strikeout-to-walk ratio over that stretch in 48 1/3 innings pitched.

Romero hasn't pitched in a Brewers uniform just yet, but he's also going to play a big role down the stretch. Before the trade, Romero had a 3.35 ERA in 44 appearances for the Cardinals and a 43-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 43 innings pitched. That production from a lefty would take the Brewers' bullpen to a higher level. The Brewers' bullpen is elite, but it has been a little thin on lefties.

If he can take his game back to the level he was pitching at in 2025, that would be even better. Romero had a 2.07 ERA in 65 appearances for the Cardinals, to go along with a 55-to-29 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 61 innings pitched. He was at his best down the stretch. From Aug. 18 through the end of the 2025 season, Romero had a 0.98 ERA in 17 outings. That's the version of Romero the Brewers need. He showed last season that he could be great down the stretch of a season. Now, we're very close to seeing if he can help Milwaukee in the playoff push.
