Dodgers Reportedly Have Not Talked Extension With a Core Roster Player

Does it make sense for Los Angeles to lock him up long-term?

Dodgers catcher Will Smith has been one of the better at the position for years now, even earning his first All-Star appearance last year. Smith gives Los Angeles another strong bat in the lineup and has come up clutch in different moments for the team.

Last season, he appeared in 126 games for Los Angeles. Smith hit .261 with 19 home runs and 76 runs batted in. He did miss some time due to a rib injury, causing some problems down the stretch.

However, according to The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya, the Dodgers and Smith have not discussed a potential contract extension at this time. He does mention that it would make sense for them to do so, but so far, it hasn't come to fruition.

"There still have been no talks between the two sides on an extension, Smith told me this week. Would it make sense? Absolutely. Are the Dodgers uniquely positioned to pivot if needed? Yes."

Per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic

Smith has been an integral piece to the Dodgers' success over the last few years, so it could be in their best interest to negotiate a deal with him. He has two years of control left on his contract, with him eligible to enter free agency in 2026.

If Smith hits the open market, the Dodgers will have to compete with plenty of teams for his services. While the team does have a few strong options in the farm system, such as Dalton Rushing and Diego Cartaya, among others, Smith has shown the ability to succeed in the big leagues.

He is a rare offensive catcher who also plays good enough defense to make things work. The certainty of Smith could push the team to extend him, even for a few seasons.

The last thing that the team wants to do is replace him with one of the younger guys, to then have the catcher position become a problem. Especially given the state of the team and championship window, the Dodgers would be wise to lock him up long-term.
