Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter has entered an agreement with the Buss family to acquire majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers, per ESPN's Shams Charania.

The previous owner of the Lakers, Jeanie Buss, will continue to serve as team Governor after the sale is complete.

The Lakers are one of the most notable franchises in NBA history, boasting 17 championships, good for the second-most among the association to the rival Boston Celtics' 18.

Per Charania, the sale is for approximately $10 billion, the largest sale of a professional sports franchise to date.

Walter is now the majority owner of the two most storied teams in Los Angeles. In 2021, he became a minority stakeholder in the basketball franchise.

Walter, who is the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, bought the Dodgers from Frank McCourt in 2012 for $2.15 billion, which was a then-MLB record. Thanks to increased spending from ownership, L.A. has been in the postseason every season since 2013, following a three year drought.

Dr. Jerry Buss first bought the Lakers back in 1979 for $67.5 million in a time when the team had not won a championship since the 1971-72 campaign. Since purchasing the team, the Lakers not only won the championship that first season, but established themselves as a juggernaut in the basketball world.

Buss gave the keys to the franchise to his children when he passed away in 2013 and they have been running the team since. The Buss family was responsible for 11 championships for the purple and gold.

The Lakers will now hope for similar luck with this transfer of power as the Dodgers owner known for spending big heads to a majority role on the hardwood.

The Lakers and Dodgers have always shared commonality among the city with their similar dominance over the years, ability to attract superstars, and the commitment to bringing championships to L.A.
