The Cleveland Guardians earned their fourth win of the season with a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

This was also the team’s second triumph in as many games with ace Shane Bieber getting the start on the mound.

For his second consecutive start to begin the season, the 28-year-old pitched a strong six innings for Cleveland. He allowed six hits, no runs, and no walks, while throwing nine strikeouts. Bieber also threw exactly 83 pitches and 55 strikes, the same two numbers he recorded in his Opening Day start back on March 28.

With his latest performance, he cemented his place in a league of his own.

According to @LukePotosky on X, Bieber is the only MLB pitcher since 1901 to record at least 20 strikeouts while allowing one-or-fewer walks and no runs in their first two games of a season.

Through his first two starts of the year, he has tallied 20 strikeouts, one walk and has yet to allow a run in 12.0 innings of work.

But this is not the first time Bieber posted these numbers in his first two starts of a season. Back in 2020, he posted 27 strikeouts, one walk, and no runs allowed in 14.0 innings pitched. He eventually ended up winning the American League Cy Young Award that year.

At the moment, Bieber’s 20 strikeouts lead MLB, and his two wins are tied for the league lead. He has held opposing hitters to a .227 batting average, while averaging an impressive 15.00 strikeouts per nine innings.

Up next, the Guardians will conclude their three-game series against Seattle on Wednesday afternoon at 4:10 p.m.
