Guardians' Plan For Deyvison De Los Santos During Spring Training

Stephen Vogt says the Cleveland Guardians plan to play Deyvison De Los Santos in left field, right field, and the infield during spring training.

The Cleveland Guardians made a low-risk, high-reward move when they took Deyvison De Los Santos in the Rule 5 Draft. He was the Arizona Diamondbacks' fifth-ranked prospect when Cleveland selected him and the power potential he possesses is real.

However, there's one issue. De Los Santos' primary position is at third base and he's occasionally played first during his minor league career. Both of those spots are obviously filled at the moment by Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor

This has forced the Guardians to go in a different direction with Deyvison. Stephen Vogt said that De Los Santos will get looks in the outfield during spring training.

"We're gonna give him some looks in right and left," said Vogt. "I think it's getting him experienced in both and seeing what's more comfortable for him is going to be the most important part. But definitely, some right field, throw him in left sometimes as well, but try to give him as many different looks as we can."

Vogt also mentioned that Dyvison will see some time in the infield too. It'll be a busy spring training for De Los Santos as he'll be moving all over the infield.

While the defensive part still needs to be worked out, it's clear how high the Guardians are on De Los Santos and his potential to be the impact bat they're looking for. Vogt said, "The power is real with him and he's working hard and he's got a great attitude. I love being around him, he's got a fun personality."

It's a lot of pressure to put on a 20-year-old to jump around to new positions when he's so comfortable in one spot. However, he does have one of the best teachers in the game. J-Ram has taken Deyvison under his wing during the early days of spring and is working with him every step of the way.

One thing Vog made clear is that De Los Santos has already put the work in to succeed. He was down at Goodyear working with coaches before officially reporting and that work ethic has been the same since spring training officially started.

"He understands the opportunity he has."
