With a five-series losing streak on the line, the Cleveland Guardians turned to starting pitcher Gavin Williams.

And he didn't disappoint.

On Thursday, August 20, the Guardians took on the San Francisco Giants in a series-finale affair, downing them 5-2. Williams, who got the nod on the mound, did everything he could to set the team up for success.

He pitched through 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits, two earned runs and three walks, all while striking out a whopping 11 batters. It's the ninth time this year that he has surpassed 10 strikeouts in an outing.

He has also now gotten over 200 strikeouts this season, the first time he has accomplished that feat in his entire career.

"Yeah, I mean, especially these last couple of months, right? I mean, he's been going out just dominating, and we talked pregame about the one-off the last time out," manager Stephen Vogt said when asked about Williams' recent play. "And he came right back out and had a couple walks, but at the same time he attacked, got the punch-outs... two hundred on August 20th is pretty impressive, so congratulations again."

His 200th strikeout came against the Giants' Willy Adames, who ate three different pitches during a six-pitch at-bat.

After flexing his offspeed, Williams dialed up a 100.3 mph heater at the top of the zone to get Adames to swing. That type of speed coming in the middle of the outing from Cleveland's starter was impressive. Eventually, Adames went down on an 84.5 mph curveball down the heart of the zone.

Reflecting postgame, the 27-year-old highlighted that he hopes this isn't the first and only time in his career that he hits such a milestone.

"Yeah, it's special, especially the first time in my career. It's definitely special to see that. I hope it continues. But yeah, I think it's awesome," Williams said.

On the campaign, Williams now sits at a 3.72 ERA with a 12-7 overall record. If he can log one more win this season, then he will have yet another career-best mark. He has also cut down on his walk count, allowing just 48 on-base.

With such growth in limiting self-inflicted wounds, Williams' WHIP has also dipped to a career-best 1.086. That is nearly .200 less than his clip of 1.270 in 2025.

While there are still improvements to be made in his ERA, which is 0.66 higher than last season, he has made incredible strides in pounding the strike zone.

Now, it's all about getting results and helping guide this Guardians team to a postseason run.

Williams is next scheduled to be on the mound on Tuesday, August 25, at Angel Stadium against the Los Angeles Angels. The two sides will square away at 9:38 p.m. EST.
