Shane Bieber Talks Increasing Number Of Pitcher Injuries In Baseball, Guardians News

Cleveland Guardians: Shane Bieber shares his perspective on why there are so many pitchers getting injured.

Shane Bieber spoke to the media for the first time since the announcement that he would miss the rest of the 2024 season and would require Tommy John surgery. The Cleveland Guardians ace talked on several topics, but one of the most interesting was what he had to say about the increasing number of injuries to the game’s top pitchers.

“Obviously, the conversations are happening, they’re continuing to grow louder and they're happening quite a bit more often,” said Bieber. “So, we’ll see what comes of it. For me, I’m not ready to say what it is. I guarantee it’s a combination of a number of factors and also all of that on top of logging a lot of innings from now all the way back into college and his high school.”

One perspective that all fans are probably interested in hearing is what Bieber’s thoughts are on the pitch clock and league-wide effort to “speed up” the game.

“If you’re going to ask about all the new rules that have been implemented and the pitch clock, I’m not ready to say that that’s the reason that it happened. From a conditioning and cardiovascular standpoint that hasn’t affected pitchers I don’t think, it’s hard to say what’s going on in the elbow and inner workings of the arm.”

It was hard to listen to Bieber talk about the injury especially knowing all of the work that he put in over the offseason to get back to this point. He went to Driveline Baseball and worked on getting an extra couple of miles an hour on his fastball which brought him look like his 2020 Cy Young form.

The date of his surgery is still unknown, but Bieber will certainly be ready to do what it takes to get back on the mound.
