Daily Recap: NL East Prepping for a Big Weekend

The Miami Marlins welcome in the defending NL East champion Atlanta Braves for a three game set

Not much action yesterday, but the games that did happen were absolutely WILD.

Let's look at what each team did yesterday, where they currently stand in the division as of this morning, and what today's game has in store. It's The Daily Recap!

Who is winning the National League East right now?

(divisional standings as of April 12th)
Braves - 7-4 (.636), -- GB, +14 run diff
Phillies - 7-6 (.538), 1.0 GB, -4 run diff
Mets - 5-7 (.417), 2.5 GB, -1 run diff
Nationals - 5-7 (.417), 2.5 GB, -14 run diff
Marlins - 2-11 (.154), 6.5 GB, -30 run diff

Thanks to New York’s absolute whalloping of Atlanta yesterday, the Braves took a big hit to their run differential, while the Mets moved into a tie for third in the division and now sport the 2nd best run differential in the division.

Game recaps from yesterday

Atlanta Braves & New York Mets

The score was 16-4 in favor of New York and it didn’t feel that close. The Mets had seven runs on the board before Atlanta logged their first base hit. The Braves managed to save the bullpen, both from call-up Allan Winans somehow making it to the 5th despite allowing seven runs over the first three innings and by using former Mets infielder Luis Guillorme on the mound in the 9th.

The Mets piled up sixteen hits in this one, including six extra-base hits, while the Braves scored only four runs on ten hits, mainly due to going only 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine batters on base.

Philadelphia Phillies

Ranger Suárez got Philly six scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the year, while Alec Bohm went 2-3 with a homer. It wasn’t a super prolific offensive day - Philly had only seven hits to ten punchies - but it was good enough to get the win off of Pittsburgh’s Jared Jones, who shouldn’t have been asked to go back out for the 7th.
