Marlins Release Starting Lineup Against Nationals Looking for Series Win

In this story:
With their playoff fate hanging in the balance on Friday night at home against the Washington Nationals, the Miami Marlins were held scoreless through seven innings.
However, RBI singles from Javier Sanoja and Otto Lopez in the bottom of the eighth inning gave them a 2-1 lead. After the Nationals tied the game in the top of the ninth, Sanoja delivered a game-winning RBI single in the home half for a 3-2 walk-off win.
Miami remains four games out of the final National League wild-card spot, but needs to clear three teams to get there. All they can do is control what they can control, and that's winning.
They will go for the series win on Saturday against Washington. The Marlins have released the lineup for the second game of the series, with Eury Pérez taking the ball for manager Clayton McCullough.

Pitching Matchup

Nationals: Jake Irvin (2-7, 5.80 ERA) vs. Marlins: Eury Pérez (6-9, 3.23 ERA)
On paper, this is a favorable matchup for the Marlins. Pérez has pitched better than the numbers indicate. In 122.2 innings, the 23-year-old has 133 strikeouts. He has been lights out in August with an ERA of 2.00 in three starts against the Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds.
Over 13 innings against the Pirates and Reds, Pérez has yet to allow a run and has allowed just five hits and 12 strikeouts. Getting him through at least six innings will be key in a series to save the bullpen.
As for Washington, they are sending out right-hander Jake Irvin and he has been roughed up in his last two starts by the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets. Over 9.1 innings, he has been roughed up for nine earned runs and 12 hits, while walking five. This will be Irvin's first start this season against Miami and it will be his 16th appearance in 2026.
