Mets Call Up Big Right-Handed Pitching Prospect To Make MLB Debut
The New York Mets have chosen to call upon one of their top pitching prospects to bolster their bullpen ahead of a big series against the Houston Astros.
The Mets called up right-hander Grant Hartwig on Monday afternoon according to the Major League Baseball transaction wire. To make room on the roster the Mets have optioned right-hander John Curtiss to Triple-A Syracuse.
Hartwig is the Mets' No. 26 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and will be making his first appearance on the 26-man roster. He'll have a chance to debut against a loaded Astros offense.
The 25-year-old has an uninspiring 4.21 ERA with a 35-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .270 batting average against and 1.64 WHIP in 25 2/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse this season.
However, he's earned his prospect status largely due to a much more enticing 2022 season where he went 6-2 with a 1.75 ERA, 83-to-24 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .187 batting average against and 1.09 WHIP in 56 2/3 innings between four levels.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-hander's fastball sits in the mid-90s and he also possesses a plus slider and solid changeup.
It'll remain to be seen if Hartwig can find what made him so dominant a year ago. He'll have to be tested at the highest level in the meantime.
