What almost was?

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Milwaukee Brewers made a "significant push" to acquire New York Mets superstar first baseman Pete Alonso at the trade deadline.

Per Rosenthal, the Mets and Brewers have differing opinions when it comes to how close the two sides were on an agreement. One Mets source denied a Brewers executive saying they got within "field goal range" on a deal.

Alonso is heading into a contract year in 2024 and the Mets will need to make a decision on his future. They can either extend him or trade him, and if he is dealt it would likely be this winter when his value will be the highest.

Since entering the league in 2019, no player has more home runs or RBIs than Alonso. In his first five seasons, he is hitting .254/.344/.534 (139 OPS+) with 185 home runs and has made the All-Star team three times. Despite batting a career-worst .224 this season, Alonso is about to eclipse the 40-home run mark, as well as achieving an OPS+ above 130 for the fourth time in his career.

With the Mets trading away Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, they have signaled that they're looking towards 2025 and 2026 as their next window to compete. For that, they must decide if Alonso is in their future plans.

Instead of Alonso, the Brewers wound up acquiring first baseman Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves, Alonso was asked by reporters about the trade rumor. He had this to say:

"I love being a Met. I love representing the city of New York the best way I possibly can. I love everybody in this clubhouse. Being a Met, it’s the only thing I know."
