Cue the trumpets?
New York Mets All-Star closer Edwin Diaz has a chance of pitching this season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his right knee that required surgery in March.
According to manager Buck Showalter, Diaz is doing "pitching-relative activities" and is doing great in his rehab program.
"Today was a good step for him," Showalter told reporters on Wednesday. "Let's put it that way. It just wasn’t done on the field."
As far as whether Diaz will pitch this season, Showalter had this to say:
"He might make it, or might not. But we're not going to push it," Showalter said. "I don't think we're there yet. He's not close to being a decision we need to make. But at some point, I'm hoping there's that discussion that gets more serious"

When asked if Diaz is throwing on flat ground or a mound, Showalter declined to answer.
"He's doing well, meeting every benchmark," he said.
Diaz injured his knee while pitching in the World Baseball Classic. It was initially assumed that he was out for the season, but there is still a chance that he can return.
