Padres Roundup: SD Demotes Infielder, Nick Pivetta in Limbo, Major Injury Updates

The San Diego Padres beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2, on Monday evening and improved to 63-57 on the year.

Right-hander Casey Mize struck out six batters in as many innings and allowed just two earned runs in a much better second start as a Padre. The bullpen combined to allow just one hit over the next three frames to allow the offense to complete the comeback.

Already down two runs going into the bottom of the second, Ty France launched a solo home run to cut the deficit in half. With one out and one on in the seventh, Jackson Merrill (hitting .357 in his last seven games) crushed a 431-foot two-run shot to give the Padres a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

In other news, the Padres demoted an infielder acquired at the trade deadline to Triple-A San Antonio. The Friars made it known that they were searching for more bats at the deadline, and though the move may seem counterintuitive, the infielder was demoted in place for an All-Star outfielder signed over the weekend.

Additionally, manager Craig Stammen revealed that right-hander Nick Pivetta threw a bullpen on Monday and the team is still waiting for an update from the pitcher himself. Pivetta has been out since mid-April with a right flexor strain in his elbow, but the bullpen is certainly promising after he abruptly left his first rehab start after just 14 pitches last week.

Finally, Pivetta is unfortunately not the only Padre on the injured list as a few other big names are with him on the shelf. With San Diego eyeing a deep October run this season, the injured stars can certainly provide a jolt on the roster depending on when they each return.

All-Star reliever Jason Adam, who has been out since the end of June, perfectly encapsulated the frustration of missing key moments of the year due to injury. If his progression continues, he and his 2.51 ERA this season can once again become a major piece of the bullpen come postseason.

“I hate to be missing time, especially at this point in the season,” Adam said at the time of the injury. “You want to be out there supporting your teammates. Especially in pretty crucial games in the middle of the long stretch with a lot of games, you want to be there. That’s what they pay us for in the bullpen.”
