Padres Suddenly Release Infielder After 3 Years in Organization

The 31-year-old will have to look for his next home.

The San Diego Padres released a ton of players over the last few weeks as they made room for undrafted free agents.

While many of those released players came at the lower minor league levels, there were a few at the higher levels, too.

The most recent one came at Triple-A El Paso.

According to the team's transaction log on MiLB.com, infielder Nate Mondou has been released. He was officially released by the El Paso Chihuahuas.

Nate Mondou Padres Tenure

Mondou initially signed with the Padres in December 2023 on a minor league contract.

He's spent each of the last three seasons at Triple-A El Paso, where he's earned consistent playing time.

In 2024, Mondou appeared in 101 games, hitting .267 with five home runs, 55 RBIs and an OPS of .772.

In 2025, he had a career year at Triple-A, hitting .308 with six home runs, 74 RBIs and an OPS of .822 across 130 games.

This year, he appeared in just 42 games, hitting .254 with five home runs, 29 RBIs and an OPS of .775.

Mondou has played all over the infield during his Padres tenure, spending time at first base, second base and third base. This year, the 31-year-old also spent some time in left field.

He was never able to earn an MLB call up with San Diego.

Who is Nate Mondou?

Mondou was initially drafted by the then-Oakland Athletics in the 13th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

He slowly worked his way up the organizational ranks, finally making his MLB debut on Oct. 4, 2022 against the Los Angeles Angels.

Mondou went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in that game. That's been his only MLB action in his 10-year professional baseball career.

After the 2022 season, Mondou went to free agency and signed with the Chicago White Sox on a minor league deal. He appeared in 118 games that season, with 116 of them coming at Triple-A.

After the 2023 season, Mondou joined the Padres organization, where he's been ever since.

At 31 years old, he's still looking to get back to the MLB level, where he'll hope to have a longer stint than his one game in 2022.

Overall, across 584 career games at the Triple-A level, Mondou is hitting .281 with 44 home runs, 332 RBIs and an OPS of .802. He also has 127 doubles, 19 triples and 28 stolen bases in that time.
