He cited the "grind of the baseball season" taking a "severe toll" on him "mentally, physically and emotionally" as the reason for his decision.
"It is a decision that I thought about during the season and became at peace with over the last 10 days," Shildt's statement read. "I gave every fiber of my being to help achieve Peter Seidler's vision of bringing a World Series Championship to San Diego. We fell short of the ultimate goal, but I am proud of what the players, staff and organization were able to accomplish the last two seasons."
According to Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune, Shildt informed the team of his plans on Saturday.
The Padres will now immediately begin their search for a new manager — and will have some big shoes to fill.

Mike Shildt's Padres Tenure
Shildt was hired by the Padres in January 2022 in a player development role. Less than two years later, in November 2023, he was named the team's manager after Bob Melvin left to join the rival San Francisco Giants.
Shildt led the Padres to a 93-69 record in his first year. They finished second in the National League West behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, and faced LA in the NL Division Series. After holding a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, the Padres bats went silent, and LA won the series en route to a World Series victory.
After the season, Shildt signed a two-year extension with the Padres that ran through the 2027 season.
This year, he and the Padres continued their dominance, finishing 90-72 and falling just short of a division title over the Dodgers.
The Padres met the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card round, but lost the best-of-three series in three games.
Nevertheless, the Padres enjoyed 90-win seasons in back-to-back years for the first time in franchise history. Moreover, Shildt led the Padres to consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
