The Philadelphia Phillies have won eight of their last 10 games entering Wednesday’s game with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Phillies (33-34) are one game away from reaching .500 for the first time since May 14 when they were 20-20.

For the past 10 games the bats have been cooking. Everyone got a hit in Tuesday’s win over the Diamondbacks.

But is this Phillies win streak as simple as changing the playlist?

After the Phillies beat Washington on June 3 to kick-start this recent surge, after the game they played “Dancing On My Own” by Calum Scott. The Phillies and their fans know the song well. They played it after every win down the stretch last season, including the postseason and the World Series.

They retired the song with the idea that the song was inextricably linked to last year’s run.

But the Phillies, prompted by hitting coach Kevin Long, brought the song back after that win over the Nationals.

They’ve played it after every win since.

Why? Catcher Garrett Stubbs told MLB.com that the reason was clear.

“Because we were sucking,” said Stubbs, who handles the team’s playlist. “We started saying it was a second-place song, but then we started sucking. We were like, ‘Second place is a whole lot better than what the [heck] we’ve been doing.’ We might as well bring it back.”

While the Phillies have only made up a game in the National League East standings since that 10-game run began, the opportunity exists for the Phillies to build more momentum going into the back half of June and get back into contention.

Sometimes, all it takes is a song.
