Reds Blanked in Agonizing 5-0 Loss vs. Giants in Series Opener

The Cincinnati Reds kicked off the final leg of their West Coast trip with a visit to Oracle Park to take on the San Francisco Giants.

After an abysmal loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, it would have been nice to see these Reds show some fight in the series opener against the Giants. Sadly, a win was not in the cards.

The game was basically over as soon as it began. The Giants earned a 5-0 shutout win over the Reds on Monday night. If you were on the East Coast and watched this one, you deserve some type of award.

Let's get into all the disappointing action from Monday's loss.

A Rare Night

There haven't been a lot of reasons to be excited to watch the Reds this summer. One of the few talents who has had a can't-miss season for the team this year has been pitching sensation Chase Burns.

Burns entered Monday's start against the Giants with 14 wins on the season. Unfortunately, that number would not grow.

Burns' performance on Monday night was one that fans have not been used to seeing from the Reds ace. The right-hander would go just 3.2 innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs on 64 pitches.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding when, or if, the Reds would shut Burns down for the rest of the season. Given the team's current chances to of making the playoffs, it feels like there could be no better time for that decision to be made.

Burns had a rare poor performance, which means his offense would need to pick up the slack. Unfortunately, that unit didn't get the memo.

Even with the Giants' starting pitcher, Carson Whisenhunt, leaving the game after 2.2 innings of work due to what appeared to be an elbow injury, the Reds' offense stayed in character by not finding a pulse at the plate.

The Reds had just five hits and came away with zero runs on a night dominated by the Giants' bullpen. If that doesn't sum up this season, I'm not sure what else will.

Game Two

The series opener at Oracle Park did not go according to plan. Now, the Reds have two more chances to pick up much-needed wins on the road.

Tuesday's game is set for another late first pitch at 9:45 p.m. ET. Brady Singer will take the hill for the Reds, and right-hander Adrian Houser will get the nod for the Giants.

A loss on Tuesday night to the Giants will be the official death of the 2026 Reds for even the most optimistic fan.
